We look back at last week’s lesson on drumlins from guest Jerome Lesemann, marveling as it seems he did, at the “absolutely astounding” scale of the water-flushed features created at the bed of a continental ice sheet. Many questions remain about the source of the meltwater and  the details of massive Glacial Lake Agassiz. Its release thru Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota River has left many clues that we can learn to  recognize as features indicating megafloods in other locations. Relict flood channels with “misfit” rivers are difficult to explain with gradualist principles, so attempts by Dury that had to include a paleo-river that was much larger than the modern flow were early indications of a flaw in the Uniformitarian model. Then RC considers Washington’s Palouse Hills as analogous to some of Jerome’s crescentic forms, and finally, shares photos of an impressive site in the Okanogan Valley.

  • Jillian??? And all those Greek, Latin, and Esperanto Prefixes still don't begin to encompass the wonders that comprise the Jillian that *I* got a chance to survey some years back. < || || ] :|: [ || || > About the enormous hill of layered current deposits -- distinct layers of boulders, gravel, sand & silt, at marker 1:33:00... That hillside CAN NOT be very stabile!! Reminds me of California's Pacific Coast Highway (used to be designated 101 when I was kid) that's made up of unconsolidated soil, sand, rocks and boulders, and REGULARLY collapses onto the roadway and beaches. People have built fancy $Jillian homes on the cliffs composed of the stuff, only to find their yards, pools, and finally, homes, undercut by the progressive collapse of the cliff face. Cantilevers notwithstanding, gravity seems to be the odds-on favorite to Win every time. So, Who Decided to build the highway right under that Big-A$$ Hump of Gravel and Silt and Boulders???????
