Jerome Lesemann, from Vancouver Island University, is a drumlin expert, and student and colleague of pioneer of the Meltwater Hypothesis for the formation of drumlins – John Shaw. After some introductory reminiscing, we let Jerome have the floor/screen to educate us about the enigmatic geomorphological features known as drumlins. Their presence far and wide across North America, beneath the former continental ice sheets is put into perspective. Though supported by hydraulic modeling and analogy across seven orders of magnitude, the widespread and various forms’ genesis is still contentious and controversial, hundreds of years after the phenomenon was first observed! The fields of drumlins are SO vast, that the quantities of water necessary to create them all is “absolutely astounding” and the major hurdle to acceptance of the hypothesis. Perhaps the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis will offer a boost to its explanatory potential…

  • Maybe this vast quantity of water needed is not one or two major events but is what happens under all glacial ice every time they thaw. Sometimes a lot, sometimes not at all, mostly in between, each and every year. Ice floats, water sinks, every time there's a warm spike in the records, water was correspondingly sinking under this vast weight of ice, picking up debris, and grinding away inexorably. The ice holds the form to make it look like it's a single flow, but in fact it is just a really really slow pulsing constant force over the centuries.

  • Often materials show substantially different performance under different environments, and in relation to different materials. Ice impinging on, for instance, limestone, versus Ice against Basalt, under different temperatures... Are there any Studies that have examined whether the Mechanical Strength of ICE shows much variation with Temperature, Pressure, and other factors that would influence its (1) Elastic limit (2) Ultimate tensile strength (3) Young's ("Tensile") modulus (4) Endurance limit???? My own knowledge of the behavior of ice in variable conditions is limited to flavored slushies, slick sidewalks, and the occasional mixed drink. So I don't have much in the way of testable quantifiable data. RESISTANCE to Deformation...tension, compression, shear. Say... Don't All of those eventually translate to HEAT? Dang. No wonder hardly anyone uses Ice as a building material except in Polar neighborhoods. They must have Really Different Building Codes... < =0)

  • So at 01:52:10, Where Dr. Lesemann shows the Alberta-Channelized Flow Chart that Dr. Shaw and his colleague mapped...THAT seems to suggest that those features might result from a VAST Sheet Flood, that left off forming the "Hummocky Terrain" on higher elevations as the Sheet Flood waters were progressively CAPTURED by the Channels Marked by John Shaw, et al. So the Hummocky Terrain that Dr. Lesemann shows to be ultimately an EROSIONAL feature, was sculpted from an earlier "fossil" landscape that Elsewhere was carried away by the flood waters that had started as a much wider, and more uniform sheet flood. Hey! I'm just trying to Wrap my brain around this, juggling New ideas like a Rubic's Cube... And I Never had the patience to solve one of Those! < =0) ... I Got it! The Drumlins were formed by till-gnawring Giant Glacial Lobster Worms! They Gnawr upon the till and extract their meager nourishment, Then EXCRETE the Drumlin-Shaped Coprolites. Their Exoskeletons are never found intact, 'cause they're Ground to powder by the Glaciers! There's your OUTRAGEOUS Hypothesis. -- "Till We Meet Again!" < =o)

  • I took geology at WSU in 1988 and not once was this information. We have 200 relatives from the Rathdrum watershed to the amazing Roosevelt Columbia Basin water project. To the outfall in Astoria, Or. please write a large history book of photos and explanations of the photos. I will offer $ 250.00 deposited
