In this extended episode, we start off considering the movement and subglacial features of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet’s Puget Lobe, with its extensive tunnel valley systems and drumlins, and search for its obscure moraine. Arguments for catastrophic and gradual formation are discussed, as we head east into the flood-scoured basalt plateau and then also north into southern British Columbia for further examples. The Great Lakes Region, New York’s Finger Lakes, Lake Pend Oreille, “Lake” Missoula, Omak Plateau and Okanagan Valley, Moses Coulee and the Mansfield Channels, are all components of the Ice Age Floods “question” that we are fascinated by interpreting. Jerome provides more evidence for subglacial lakes and asks: “How can there NOT be water flowing in [to the Scablands] from southern British Columbia?” And so again – Back to Bretz…

  • Superb episode! Jerome did a fantastic job of explaining features and their causes and where the ambiguities stand in the way of a full understanding of these megafloods. What a great communicator! In conversation with Antonio Zamora I floated the idea of an enormous scale impact caused flash of heat that turned 1000s of cubic miles of the continental ice sheet that covered Canada at the time into water and steam sending a ice surface tsunami that had the energy and volume to make it all the way to the sheet margins then spill over. Looking at both the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets both display pronounced elevational increase at their cores or central points which would give a natural gradient enhancing and enabling such a scenario. The volumes of melt would overwhelm the ability of crevasses to drain or impede the flow, especially if it happened in late summer/fall when glacial surface melt is peaking anyway. Could not some of the anomalies highlighted in this show be explained by such a scenario?
