We make multiple stops around the Southern Appalachians before heading to the desert southwest, en route to an extended look at the Bonneville Flood over the next few episodes, on our way to the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington State. Cumberland Falls in Kentucky, Noccalula Falls Cataract and channel at the foot of Lookout Mountain in Gadsden Alabama, and Bonas Defeat on the Tuckasegee River of western North Carolina all show effects of dramatic and transformative flood action, most likely from extended rainstorm “pluvial” flood-flows. Bouncing out to New Mexico’s Valles Caldera and it’s drainage from an impounded lake within the Grand Valley, and the curious towering hoodoos of the least visited National Park in the Chiricahuan Mountains, we look at the evidence of sudden overwhelming rainfalls reshaping the landscapes, that few people get to witness or perceive...

  • At video time marker 1:30:09, just above the caption "Brad's photos from 2002 REXpedition," there is one pinkish rock that seems to have found a mate, and the two are steadfastly and earnestly endeavoring to start a dynasty of their own. That, or the stone masons who fitted the mind-stretchingly precise multi-ton, polygonal blocks at Sacsayhuaman, and dozens of other sites in Peru, must have visited the Chiricahua mountains for R&R... On the other hand, people have in the past noted that I have a... well... Dirty Mind! Take a look at the rocks center screen, foreground, and maybe I'm not alone in my 'spicions.

  • As you were discussing the main Breach in the caldera rim, I went to Google maps to look . There is a small community -- looks like 75 - 100 residences and a few stores --- just inside and outside the gap. Just where the lazy meandering Redondo Creek and the dirt road of the caldera flatland join San Antonio Creek and New Mexico state route 4. That paved 2-lane road comes up from the east, makes a hair-pun tirn just at the gap, then descends to the SOUTH. So it connects that bitty village with Santa Fe and other communities to the East, and Albuquirky and other communities to the South. Either of those trips up or down the mountain looks like a few hours, with all the switchbacks. Tracing even a little of that outlet canyon with Google's 3D view made me dizzy. I'm guessing from the RELENTLESS meandering of the Redondo Creek toward that gap, that the most recent draining of the meltwater from the caldera must have created a VERY slight slope with fine silt. That must have come AFTER the Tumultuous BREACHING event, that could not have been a particularly peaceful episode... But, after all, millions of years allows plenty of time for calmer subsequent draining.

  • I love what you guys are doing with this new platform. I have watched literally Everything i could find the Randall has a part of. After a difficult stage in my life i certainly feel that need to throw my hat in the ring with you fine gentlemen and sift through the muddy waters that has become accepted as knowledge. Those with the eyes to see and ears to hear are obliged to share their thoughts and collected experiences with inquisitive minds both young and old. Godspeed and cheers once again...
