Episode #049: Subglacial Megafloods in Southern BC

RC and crew again attempt to grok the widespread shifts that would have filled the many proglacial lakes and released the catastrophic drainings across the landscapes. What was the chronology of these interrelated events? Ice dam and Missoula Floods

Looking to continue the discussion on drumlins, RC and crew again  attempt to grok the widespread shifts that would have filled the many proglacial lakes and released the catastrophic drainings across the  landscapes. What was the chronology of these interrelated events, and could the time-scale be compressed from what has been figured for  decades? While making repeated references to the “Missoula Floods” and  the accepted story of the ice dam and ever-present strandlines, RC raises perceptive questions that will be probed as we move forward, and  link the megafloods to a comprehensive continental catastrophe. We look at sites from our 2017 trip with Jerome Lesemann in south-central  British Columbia, digesting his plentiful geologic knowledge and admiring the effects of the subglacial floods across the region.

  • Around marker 59:00... Your review of the terms you need to understand for any discussion of glacial development and demise can still cause a kid substantial confusion. Maybe it's just our English language, with so many influences. How you gonna 'splain to some kid in elementary school the meaning... of someone caught "with his hand in the till?" When you come to think of it, there are a nawful lot of places you could get caught with your hand in... = !! BTW, that seems to be a mighty DISTINCT Discontinuity at the base of the Vertical Cliff shown near the Right side of the screen at marker 01:02:34... At first, it seemed to mark the edge of the water, but looking closer, it seems it might be a pipe or a woven steel cable, or even the impossibly-long extension of the fallen conifer in the foreground. Anyone else care to guess? Sasquatch's dental floss? Nice enhanced photo at 01:42:06. The hillsides/mountainsides at the furthest distance look as though they were DENUDED by the flood. That looks like fer-Pete's-sake NAKED rock! Limestone? Granite? ?
