  • Wow, this alone is worth the Patreon contribution (to me at least). Don't discount landslides as causes of tsunamis, this could have been a landslide elsewhere. - And while this is on a much larger scale, we just had a caldera collapse (I live on Hawaii Island) happen 4 years ago, and it was lava moving out sideways because the pressure from it was more than the rift zone it ended up coming out of could hold in, and we know these islands are volcanic. Tossing this out there on submarine canyons: there is an area SE of Hawaii which McDonald et al. (Volcanoes in the Sea - my copy is a bit older, don't know whether newer ones still talk about this) describe as essentially flat and conclude that it must have been at sea level where I don't remember whether it was 1500 feet or 1500 meters below sea level, but if there was a time when Earth was essentially an ice ball sea level could have been that low when it first started to melt (wherever continents were then). (my background: physicist/astronomer turned software engineer working at an observatory in Hilo, Hawaii - and I read that textbook for 'bedtime reading' many years ago. Found you basically because somebody in a Facebook group couldn't spell "Taurid")
