When planning a Milky Way trip, you also need to factor in wildfire season and monsoon season. Both of these can ruin your summer trips. Generally, your safest bet in the Western US is during May - June.

I recommend you use Google Earth to start the recon process for your Milky Way photo shoots. This is a great way to learn the terrain of your destination. It's also a smart idea to visit your shooting location during the day first.

During our Milky Way planning, we must account for the Moon. If we go out and shoot when the Moon is above the horizon, it may overpower the Milky Way. However, we don't necessarily have to wait for the New Moon to get great photos.
